I talked last week about how to start your skin on its journey towards being healthy and glowing from the inside, but now it’s time to see what we can do from the outside.
Y’all on the coconut oil train, right? If not, seriously, you need to give it a go!
I’ve been using coconut oil for years now and once I started using it I was an immediate convert and knew I wouldn’t be giving it up any time soon. In fact, when Ben and I first met, I successfully converted him too. It’s like a coconut oil cult, which actually kinda sounds like the name of a reggae band…
Anyway, when you read about all the benefits coconut oil has, and how this will help your skin, you’ll be wondering why you haven’t started using it sooner. Are you ready for some facts? Here we go:
- It accelerates re-epithelialization meaning it helps your skin heal faster
- It improves antioxidant activity meaning it helps fight against free-radicals
- It stimulates collagen meaning healthier skin
- It has anti-inflammatory and pain relieving properties, meaning it helps soothe your skin
- It is anti-fungal which means it’s fighting any skin-based fungal infections
Not convinced? Here are some articles that explore the medicinal properties of coconut to read at your leisure.
The fact that it is an all-natural alternative to harsh chemicals, and doesn’t cause my sensitive skin an adverse reaction means it’s not only ok in my books, but the entire book from start to finish when it comes to “must haves” in my beauty regime.
So, how exactly can we use coconut oil as part of our beauty routines? Quite easily:
I use coconut oil to remove my mascara every evening and it does an amazing job – even on the water proof stuff! Coconut oil is rich in antioxidants and is incredibly hydrating, so you get the amazing natural benefits of the oil as you remove your makeup.
Just rub a small amount of coconut oil between your palms until it has melted, and then smooth over your eyes and allow to sit for about 20 seconds. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry before continuing your skin care routine.
Water and oil don’t mix, so using water to remove excess oil build up from your skin is never going to work. Instead, coconut oil with its antibacterial, antifungal and antiaging properties as an oil cleanser: it’s a great solution for oily skin.
Simply massage a small amount into your skin then rinse with lukewarm water. Cleanse as usual and notice the huge difference to your skin.
The smoothest shave I have ever experienced involves using coconut oil as it helps the blade glide smoothly over your body, leaves your skin smooth and hydrated, and immediately aids the repair process if you nick or cut yourself.
Simply rub coconut oil over your skin before shaving as normal, and remember to rinse your blade regularly under hot water to remove any oil buildup.
Not only is coconut oil amazing for your skin, but also your hair as it’s able to penetrate deep into the shaft to deposit moisture where most oils struggle.
Apply a small amount of coconut oil to your hair, comb through, then tie your hair up in a bun. Leave the coconut oil in your hair for at least an hour, or even over night, before shampooing to reveal beautiful moistureful hair.
I have psoriasis (triggered by dairy) and keratosis pilaris (triggered by gluten) so when my body is having an adverse reaction to my food intolerances (because let’s be honest, I love pizza), coconut oil is my go to for relief.
I’ve already mentioned all the wonderful properties coconut oil has, and so massaging it into my body, focusing on the affected areas, the oil provides a calming, moisturising solution to my ailments. It helps to relieve the redness, the itchiness and the irritability of my skin woes.
