How to Maintain Beautiful Skin


A few years ago one of my friends asked what foundation I was wearing, as my skin looked “flawless”. When I responded that I wasn’t actually wearing any makeup at all, let alone foundation, I was quizzed about exactly how I managed to get my skin so spotless, smooth and glowing.

Now, I have been moisturising twice a day since I was 16 but moisturiser isn’t the be-all and end-all of beautiful skin. Your skin is an important indicator of what is going on the inside, meaning beautiful skin starts from the inside out. Not only do I have a great skincare routine, but I am careful about what I eat, and take supplements every morning to help support my body, inside and out.

All of these aspects come together to create beautiful skin.

But why should you worry about having healthy, glowing skin though? Why should you want radiant skin? Well, great skin not only makes you look younger, but will help boost your self-confidence, and whether you’re female or male, great skin is the best and simplest accessory.

As well as a diet full of leafy greens (I eat salad every day for lunch) below are the things I do to ensure healthy, glowing skin:

Skin care & Makeup

I used to have the worst skin, skin so bad I had to wear a fringe to hide a constantly blistered forehead. Eventually, I changed skincare and makeup products, and my skin cleared up over the following weeks.

If you are constantly prone to break outs that nothing seems to be fixing, it may be your makeup or skincare products – just because something says it’s for sensitive skin, doesn’t mean it’s right for your skin. I always keep an eye out for any negative reactions my skin has whenever I use a new product, and if I see my skin is reacting adversely, that product swiftly goes in the bin.

I have discovered over the years that just because a product is more expensive, doesn’t mean it’s better than a more affordable product. I use the Balance Active (via Amazon) and Vaseline skin care ranges which are very affordable, and I find them to have an amazingly positive influence on my skin.

BB Creams

I use BB Creams from South Korean brands not only because they are designed for sensitive skin, but also for pale skin such as my own.

BB Creams originated in Germany as a beauty product gentle enough for those who had had surgery, though it was the South Korean beauty industry that took it to the next level and made it as widely available and popular as it is today. BB Cream is a miracle cream that moisturisers, balances your skin tone, has anti-aging/wrinkle properties, and contains an SPF for sun protection. Because it is designed for sensitive skin it is incredibly gentle and far less likely to clog pores like heavier foundations tend to. I stopped using foundations years ago, and I only ever wear BB Creams from South Korean brands, as I find western brands to be far more expensive yet incredibly inferior.

Coconut Oil

I clean my skin at the end of every day when in the shower  whether or not I have worn makeup that day. To do so I use Coconut Oil, and keep a large jar of it in my bathroom.
Coconut oil contains medium chain fatty acids or triglycerides which keep skin soft and smooth. Also, Coconut oil contains antimicrobial properties, meaning it kills bacteria, meaning it reduces breakouts and acne. If that wasn’t enough it’s also rich in Vitamin E! So it’s definitely a much healthier, cheaper, alternative to harsh chemical makeup removers and cleansers.

Although it can be scary to use oil to cleanse your skin if you have oily skin, coconut oil actually helps balance out your skin. Remember, just like your hair, your skins natural oils are incredibly important so we don’t want to strip them out, just balance them.


I drink a lot of water – at least 3L every day either in the form of sparkling mineral water, or cup after cup of green tea. I even keep a bottle of water by my bed! I am always hydrated.

I’m sure you’ve noticed how after a night of heavy drinking your skin looks old and even the smallest of lines seem to have grown in depth over night? That’s because you’re dehydrated. Water is important to keep us hydrated and to wash out waste: if waste builds up in our bodies it tries to find a way out – via our skin! I drink roughly 2L of water a day, maybe more, and always have bottles of sparkling of water in the pantry and a cup of green tea by my side.

Green tea

Green tea is rich in antioxidants which help rid the body of free radicals, those nasty toxins that attack the healthy, living cells within our bodies.  It also helps balance certain hormones in your body, especially those hormones that affect your skin. I drink about 8 cups of green tea a day, and I make it incredibly strong – I leave the tea bag in until I’ve finished my cup!

Dietary supplements, Biotin and Gelatin

I am only a small person, so I don’t eat a lot which means my diet is unfortunately lacking in a lot of vital nutrients and vitamins. I take biotin and gelatin every morning along with other multivitamins such as cranberry extract (full of antioxidants), apple cider vinegar, a daily multi vitamin, vitamin D, and fish oil. Yes, I rattle when I walk!

Biotin, or Vitamin B7, is a supplement that promotes not only healthy skin, but also hair and nails.  It helps improve metabolic, nerve, digestive and cardiovascular functions which of course translates to healthy skin.

Although it may seem weird to suggest gelatin for healthy skin, gelatin is actually full of amino acids which are necessary for healthy skin. See, gelatin comes from collagen, and we all know collagen is essential not only for healthy skin, but also digestive health. Rather than going out and buying skin care full of collagen, it’s better to introduce either gelatin or dietary collagen to your diet to improve your skin from the inside out.

Food intolerances

Not all intolerances are made equal. Some foods can upset your tummy, whilst others wreak havoc on your skin! If I eat certain types of cheeses, or large amounts of dairy, I end up with large, incredibly painful cysts on my face. If I eat gluten my skin also breaks out not only on my face, but I also develop Keratosis Pilaris (chicken skin) on my arms. If you have tried everything in order to get spot-free skin, but nothing is working, try an exclusion-diet and see if anything you are eating is affecting your skin in a negative fashion. Remember, the junk you put into your body needs to find a way out somehow, and it’s typically through our skin.
